PSHE Intent

INTENT

At Tadcaster Primary Academy, the aim of Personal, Social, Health education is to help children to become responsible members of society. Our aim is to focus on strengthening the knowledge, skills, and connections to keep children and young people healthy and safe and prepare them for future life. It is our aim to ensure that we help our children understand how to live their life appreciating our culturally diverse world.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Tadcaster Primary Academy we deliver PSHE sessions in a weekly session to each class team. These sessions are taught  by our Pastoral Lead and are also taught by the class teacher. PSHE statutory content is covered by learning opportunities intertwined with RSHE learning and objectives are covered within three core themes: Relationships, Living in the wider world and Health and Wellbeing. These three themes are taught during the year on a three year cycle. In EYFS and Year One weekly sessions are taught through the use of picture books, circles and by developing the children’s ability to explore their emotional wellbeing. As children move through school PSHE and RSHE learning deals with more complex matters. All children are encouraged to discuss their feelings through emotional wellbeing check-ins on a daily basis. Teaching and learning opportunities begin with an initial assessment activity for each new topic, module, or series of lessons. This gauges pupils’ starting point in terms of their existing knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. An end assessment demonstrates the progress pupils have made since the learning began. Many of the themes delivered within PSHE sessions are also addressed in fortnightly whole school assemblies and link effectively with the four fundamental British Values: Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance and Individual Liberty. Within these assemblies children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding is also explored.

IMPACT

At Tadcaster Primary Academy, the impact of PSHE teaching is evidenced in PSHE books, on classroom displays and in pupil feedback and demonstrates a growing understanding of the world around them. Economic wellbeing, careers and enterprise education, as well as education for personal safety, including assessing and managing risk will all enable our children to move on from their Primary education as emotionally intelligent, confident individuals who have an understanding of all aspects of the world around them.
