Music Intent

INTENT

At Tadcaster Primary Academy we value Music because it is a powerful and unique form of communication that can change and impact the way children feel, think and act. It is our aim, in line with the National Curriculum, to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and encourage their talent as musicians. It is our intent to deliver a Music curriculum which inspires pupils to develop a love of music and a willingness to explore different instruments and genres of music. This will increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. Children will sing, play instruments, perform to different audiences and work together to create their own pieces of music which they can be proud of.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Tadcaster Primary Academy, Music is taught as part of whole school curriculum topics or themes by our specialist Music teacher. Six elements of Music are incorporated into lessons. These are: Listening, Singing, Pitch, Pulse, Composition and Timbre. Music learning is brought to life through specialist teaching, visits and visitors, stories and poems, use of the locality, films and photographs, composition and performance. Children are supported in learning and developing their skills relative to their age and relevantly linked to their topic work. Each topic culminates in a Celebration event for children and parents, where learning is shared and new skills presented.

IMPACT

At Tadcaster Primary Academy, the impact of Music teaching is evidenced in music books, on classroom displays, around the school environment and in pupil feedback and demonstrates an enjoyment of music and a growing understanding of the creative world in all its elements. Acquisition of key knowledge and skills is central to each topic and teachers strive to ensure children are building their knowledge and understanding of music alongside their skill development.
