In reading lies knowledge. In knowledge lies wisdom.

Reading is at the heart of everything a primary school should offer. Not least because being able to read really matters for the economic success and wellbeing of the future adults who pass through our doors.

Above all, reading fiction and non-fiction is also a pleasure that we at TPA wish to share with our children. Reading is the door to creativity, to visualisation, to greater knowledge and future success.

Research shows that children who read for pleasure on a daily basis develop a wider vocabulary, greater general knowledge and a far better understanding of other cultures. It is perhaps one of the single most important factors in a child’s development.

At Tadcaster Primary Academy, it is our mission to ensure that all pupils read widely and confidently with fluency and comprehension appropriate to their age, whilst developing a love for reading for pleasure. Above all we respect and nurture the rights of a reader.

We look to inspire, excite and engage children in reading in many ways:

  • As teachers sharing our own love of reading by offering books and authors which children will enjoy.
  • Celebrating  “Books we love” from the very beginning in Early Years and experiencing a range of engaging novels, short stories, picture books, poems, comics, graphic novels and non-fiction as children move through school
  • 1:1 reading with adults and  peers
  • Accessing  a library with the opportunity to be a school librarian or Reading Ambassador
  • Providing Class reading corners that offer a range of quality texts
  • Celebrating World Book Day
  • Offering Reading initiatives such as Get Caught Reading which celebrate reading and give an opportunity to win book prizes in our fortnightly reading raffle
  • Receiving a book gift at Christmas financed by our Parent-Teacher Association, TPAC.
  • Offering a Phonics information evening for parents to learn about Little Wandle, our Phonics programme and how they can support children’s reading
  • Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge in collaboration with our local library
  • Enjoying visits from published authors and maintaining a link with our own Patron of Reading, Karen Langtree

Our children will embrace their own individual reading journey and will celebrate their reading milestones as they develop new strategies, learn new words, explore different genres, discover unknown authors, experience unfamiliar settings and unpick hidden meanings.

Through discrete phonics sessions (Little Wandle Revised Letters and Sounds), one-to-one reading with an adult and group reading, we teach our youngest children how to decode the written word, whilst building a greater understanding of comprehension.

Reading sessions in all year groups support children to develop skills in, and understanding of, vocabulary, inference, prediction explanation and retrieval (VIPERS)
